New records of the Endangered southern river otter <i>Lontra provocax</i>, with notes on its diet, in threatened wetlands of southern Chile

Abstract The wetlands inhabited by the southern river otter Lontra provocax in Chile are subject to anthropogenic disturbances. As a result of modification and destruction its habitat, caused loss riparian vegetation, other threats, species is categorized as Endangered on IUCN Red List. We monitored diet during September 2020–January 2021 swamp forest fragment Chile. obtained evidence presence from upper part wetland confluence with Bueno River, suggesting inter-population connectivity an extensive hydrographic basin. Faeces food remains showed predominance native macrocrustaceans, introduced fish present at lower levels. detection threatened suggests low abundance environmentally degraded freshwater environments. identification subpopulations such one reported here provides valuable data support conservation wetlands.
